The Diana Foundation, the nation’s oldest continuously active LGBTQ+ organization, is set to shine a powerful spotlight on transgender pioneers at its 72nd Diana Awards on Friday, March 28, from 7–11 p.m. at Decorum at Pour Behavior in Midtown, Houston, TX. This highly anticipated evening of celebration, entertainment, and recognition will feature the presentation of The Diana Award for Community Achievement to two groundbreaking transgender activists: Monica Roberts (posthumously) and Judge Phyllis Frye.

Honoring Legends: Monica Roberts & Judge Phyllis Frye

Monica Roberts, a fearless journalist and advocate, was a driving force behind transgender visibility and accurate media representation. As the founder of TransGriot, she dedicated her life to amplifying trans voices, especially Black trans women, and ensuring that their stories were told with dignity and respect. Her work challenged media misrepresentation and fought for justice for countless individuals. Though she passed in 2020, her impact remains a beacon of progress in the fight for equality.

Judge Phyllis Frye is a legal trailblazer whose groundbreaking career reshaped the legal landscape for transgender rights. Appointed in 2010 as the first openly transgender judge in the United States, she has been a relentless advocate, legal strategist, and mentor for the LGBTQ+ community. From her early years in the U.S. Army to her pivotal role in shaping trans-inclusive policies, Frye’s contributions have transformed the fight for justice and civil rights.

Defying Erasure: A Celebration of Trans Resilience

At a time when the "T" is being erased from the Stonewall National Monument, The Diana Foundation remains steadfast in its commitment to honoring and uplifting the transgender community. "You cannot erase courage and love," said Tanner Williams, president of The Diana Foundation. "Monica Roberts and Judge Phyllis Frye are icons of resilience and change, and their impact will live on for generations to come."
